Question: My aunt hears whistle sound in her left ear.

This mainly happens to her because of cold. There is no cough or sneezes. No runny nose. She gets little sputum in the morning. There is no fever.

This whistle sound aggravates in the night, day time it is negligible. She also feels a little heaviness in her head.

Brief Answer:
Tinnitus, Age, ETD, Allergy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The sounds are known as Tinnitus.

2. Ear wax and age related hearing loss is the most common cause.

3. The history also suggests ETD (Eustachian Tube Dysfunction) with allergy and possible sinusitis.

4. Get her hearing tests (Pure Tone Audiogram and Impedance Audiometry) done and uoload the reports here for further discussion.

5. Her Tinnitus appears to be mild. Start steam inhalation, an anti allergy mefication.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Do you mean this is not related to the cold she has?
Is there a home made remedy that we can try to alleviate the problem?

Details as discussed below:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for following up.

1. Allergy is a more appropriate term than a cold, which may be viral also.

2. This is related to allergy (or cold as you equate it with). But other factors such as age related hearing loss, ETD may be involved.

3. Steam inhalation and an anti-allergic tablet may help. No other home remedy is likely to decrease tinnitus.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
