I was taking a supplement and did not realize it was 5000 mcg..I took it daily..lately I have been feeling like there is more adrenaline in my system ..I have been having some tachycardia and skipped heartbeats.. would taking the supplements cause this? How long does it take to reduce your b12 levels?

Brief Answer:
Vitamin B12 is non-toxic

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin, which means that it dissolves in water and extra Vitamin B12 is easily excreted by the kidneys. Fortunately, this means that it would be very difficult to take too much Vitamin B12, and there is no clear upper limit for using it. Also, there have not been shown to have any side effects from too much Vitamin B12, except possibly acne. So while I would say you can stop the Vitamin B12 supplement you are taking, I do not think it is responsible for your symptoms. For these, I would suggest seeing a doctor to get bloodwork done, especially your thyroid function, to see if this might be related to the tachycardia and skipped heartbeats. As for how long it would take for your Vitamin B12 levels to return to normal, I would expect it would take no longer than a few weeks.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

Brief Answer:
TSH is the main test for thyroid

Detailed Answer:
No, if you have a normal TSH I would say that likely rules out any thyroid problems. I assume your doctor has already done an EKG and it didn't show anything. Otherwise, getting an echocardiogram and sometimes a holter monitor to record your heart rhythm over a week or longer can be done to further investigate this. You should also make sure to check a complete blood count (CBC) if you haven't already, to look for anemia as a possible cause for this. Electrolyte abnormalities (such as low potassium) can also be a cause, so I would check those as well.

Hopefully that gives you some things to discuss with your doctor about, please let me know if you have any other questions, I would be glad to help any way I can.
