My Dad Has Been Having These Episode’s When He’s On

Question: My dad has been having these episode’s when he’s on the phone. He’s talking on the phone with someone and then he spaces out and walks away in a trance and goes to his bed and falls asleep and then doesn’t remember what happened. He’s diabetic. He’s also had seizures in the past and he was put on medication Lamotrigine 100 mg. He’s supposed to get checked with a Neurologist to see how his medication is working for him with the seizures but his doctor hasn’t sent him and it’s been 3 years. And recently it happened to him while he was walking. His feet started to drag and he was spaced out and he sat somewhere and fell asleep and started snoring and again with no recollection of what happened. In another episode he was spaced out but this time he was angry. And my brother tried to calm him down. I don’t know if the episodes could be small seizures or what.

Brief Answer:
neurologist follow up.alone travelling not advisable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* As per my clinical experience, the episodes of sudden spacing out in
relation to time, place and person indicate alterations in neurochemical
transmitter levels provoking absence seizure or post icterus stare
condition.

* The Lamotrigene is an anti epileptic drug used for many of the seizure
disorders, bipolar and mood disorders as well with best proven efficacy on
clinical grounds.

However, the drug requires regular and periodic evaluation by clinician for its results, dose alteration with or without addition of extra drugs depending upon the response by individual patient.

As there is period of 3 years for follow up consulting with his Neurologist, it is strongly recommended to make a priority base appointment and get the issue fixed.

Till that time, you have to be cautious so far his lone travelling is concerned, as this may provoke at any place or time without any intimation.

Wish him best health and recovery.
Do feel free to discuss further regarding the same.

Have a great day.
Regards.
