Question: My dad is 83 on diabetic drugs and hypertension drug as well as cholesterol statin and also is taking proscar for last 4 years for his BPH. he has had also angipolast 4 years ago.
He has trouble sleeping even a few hours he has dreamy sleep.
Also he now feels like he is walking on water which is delusional. He also feels weakness in body esp legs.
Should I stop his proscar as he feels he has lost control over his bladder. He is having memory issues and cognitive issues. Could be due to brain atrophy due to age ?? Do I need to give him any vitamins etc. or can I stop his proscar as he originally took it to help urination flow due to his enlarged prostate at that time 4 years ago?
Also can I stop his statin for cholesterol which he has been taking also for 4 years and his cholesterol range is normal?
Kindly advise.

Brief Answer:
MRI should be done and don't stop drugs.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
If he has lost control over his bladder this is not a side effect of Proscar but is in the complex symptoms of brain atrophy.
If you stop Proscar his prostate is more likely to continue to grow again and get enlarged causing urinary problems.
You should not stop statins too.
His cholesterol is in normal range only because he is taking statins. Stopping them is dangerous and may cause stroke and heart attack. Statines are lifelong treatment.
The symptoms he is experiencing are from brain atrophy probably from aging but this yet needs to be confirmed.
He can do an MRI to check lesions.
Using a B complex vitamins can help somehow.
Hope I have answered the question.

Can use temazepam.

Hello again.
You can try to modify his lifestyle to help have a better sleep.
Try to increase physical activity at evening.
Make him sleep in a dark room without noices.
Keep a good room temperature.
Don't let him sleep after 2 pm.
You can use temazepam if it doesn't improve.
