Question: My daughter has loose watery motions since 2 days. Howe ever this morning she had normal motion. We are giving her Enterogermina Oral Suspension last two days once in a day. She had again loose motions 3 times in last one hour. We just added some sugar and salt in her water just now.

Currently she is active, smiling, playing. No fever. No indications of weakness. We just fed her curd rice at 7.30 pm.

11 months female baby. No other health issues.

Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Give ORS, watch for signs of dehydration

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through the query and do understand your concern.
Loose motion in this age is commonly due to some viral infection and improves within 5-6 days with conservative treatment.
I won't get worried if baby is otherwise active, taking feeds/fluids well, passing urine and there is no vomiting or blood in stool.
The main aim of management here is to give adequate amount of fluid to avoid any dehydration.
Enterogermina contains probiotic and helps in maintaining healthy gut bacteria, thus helps in early recovery.
I suggest you not to give salt and sugar mixed solution but to give ORS (oral rehydration solution) to avoid dehydration.
The ORS is a balanced mixture of minerals.Giving home made salt and sugar solution may cause electrolyte imbalance if not made properly.
Watch for danger signs as mentioned earlier and if you notice any please consult your physician.
You can give curd rice.Avoid giving extra sugar or juice.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards.

Thanks for the response.

2 questions:

1. What are signs of dehydration?
2. What dosage should we give ORS?

Appreciate your advice.

Brief Answer:
Give ORS as much as she can take

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for follow up

Signs of dehydration are decreased activity, letharginess, lax skin, depressed eye sockets and decreased frequency of high colored urine.Frequent vomiting or decreased oral intake of fluids may lead to dehydration.
You may give ORS as much as she can take.Ideally about 70-100 ml of fluid should be given after each loose stool.
You may give plain water also in between if she is not liking the ORS. But avoid giving home made salt and sugar solution as that may cause more harm rather than benefit.

I shall be glad to answer if you have any more queries.
Regards
