Question: My daughter is 15 she had her first routine bloodwork. She is healthy and on oral birth control. Her liver enzymes were slightly elevated. Dr says she is 35 and should be 32. She thinks its her birth control. She said we will retest later. Should I be more worried its cancer or something serious. I do know she was negative for hepatitis

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor' service.

I would not be concerned about this at all. Your daughter's elevation of her liver enzymes is very slight.

These enzymes often fluctuate due to many causes, including mild viral illnesses that may not have any other symptoms. While birth control pills can rarely cause some liver problems, but they do not appear to be responsible for causing liver cancer. I agree with your doctor's plan to recheck it in a few months or so, and most likely they will have returned to normal by then. But even if they were still elevated, I would still not be worried for anything serious.

Hope that helps.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
