My Father In Law Went To The Emergency Room 2
Question: My father in law went to the emergency room 2 weeks (on a Saturday) ago bc he couldn’t urinate and had excruciating pain. He’s been on medication for years for an already enlarged prostate. They sent him home with a father her stating he had a bladder infection. That Monday he visited his urologist. He said the antibiotics the ER gave him wasn’t very good and prescribed something else and told him to return the following week. The following week he went back to that urologists. After uncomfortably waiting four hours in the waiting room they removed the catheter and said he still has a bladder infection so they can’t give him a scan to see what’s wrong. His prostate is so enlarged that he can’t urinate without it so it went back in. He said the doctor gave him medication to shrink his prostate. I was confused bc I thought he was already taking medication for that daily. He said the medicine he was on before didn’t shrink his prostate, but enlarge the tube to help urinate. Clearly I have no idea what he’s talking about, but I’m just very concerned for him as I know having a catheter in long term can also lead to infection. I would like to take him for a second opinion as the urologist he’s been seeing all these years has terrible reviews with people stating routine procedures are extremely painful. My father in law told me that when he reinserted the catheter he was in excruciating pain vs. when he went to the ER and it was done there. I guess what I’m wondering is...is he getting proper treatment?? Why hasn’t he gotten any scans yet? How does a bladder infection last over a week on antibiotics? I’m really concerned he might have cancer. Kindly advise. Thank you!!
Brief Answer:
Drainage and shrinkage is necessary
Detailed Answer:
Hi Jackietma
A UTI in conjunction with prostate hyperplasia requires drainage with a bladder catheter, antibiotics and medicine to reduce prostate size. What medicine is he currently on? In some cases, surgical resection is necessary. Has he had urine cultures? What antibiotic is he on?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
