My Father Is Been Treated For A Collapsed Lung For
Question: My father is been treated for a collapsed lung for the past two weeks, however, even with the chest tube inserted the lung keeps collapsing. What will the doctors try next?
Brief Answer:
A chest CT is needed
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome in Ask the Doctor
In such situation we first do a bronchoscopy to see for the cause of the collapse
If we don't find anything inside the airways than the cause might be from the weakened of the muscles or the thoracic cage . It depends on the comorbidities of your father if he already has any. A chest CT is very helpful too in this condition and the result would be helpful for me
Please give more information about them and his age; his past lung history, because it will help me to discuss for the exact causes oft he lung collapse.
Hope to have been helpful

Detailed Answer:
Hi again
As you explain the situation he probably has swallowed a tablet in the airways and it will be the cause of the collapse. They will try to get it off with bronchoscope with steroids and the lavage of the airways.

He is 68. I don't know the full results of tests but I do know there is some damage to the lining of the lung. I don't fully understand but I think it is just one part of it that is collapsing. The doctors just saw him and said that their options are to seal it, remove a part of it, and I think the third one was a tablet?? He was a smoker, gave them up about two years although he does smoke one every so often. He doesn't get chest infections often but did have one when the lung first collapsed two weeks ago.
