Question: My husband got bitten on his leg by a domestic cat on 4/10. He has gone to Dr on 4/17 and Dr stated that he was surprised the leg and lymph nodes were not swollen and that the bite area was not inflammed more and that he had no fever. Dr prescribed Amoxicillin and said he should be ok as long as swelling doesnt get bigger. It has not but how long until the scabbing goes away and how long until bite heals? dr did not prescribe any oinment for leg but husband has been treating it with apple cider vinegar, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. the redness is the skin being burnt by the peroxide but looks better everyday. would this kind of wound take weeks to heal or about a month? is it still infected badly in your opinion?

Brief Answer:
Probably at least a couple more weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask A Doctor' service.

I too would be surprised he didn't have more signs of infection than it sounds like he did. The wound looks extensive for a cat bite, but it does look like it has already reached the worst it is going to get and is in the stages of healing now.

It does not look particularly infected right now, and as long as the redness, swelling, and pain are improving, you wouldn't need to do anything else. A wound this extensive will likely need at least a few more weeks to heal, it may take another month or so to completely resolve and form a scar.

It should be improving at this point, so if at any point it is not, and has worsening redness, swelling, pain, or fever, be sure to have your doctor take another look at it and possibly extend or change the antibiotics.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions, I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

Regards
