Question: My husband is 82 years old. Ne has been Type ! diabetic foir over 40 years. His blood sugar is frequently going too low and it takes a lot of time and energy on my part or on the part of paramedics to bring hom around. Our family is tired of this situation. We would like hom to let his blood sugar rise instead of trying to keep it close to 7 on the Canadian scale. What should his blood sugar be so he doesn't drop low so often?

Brief Answer:
He is taking too much insulin.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

According to your description he is taking more insulin than he needs. He shouldn't take insulin that often.
He may need to take insulin if it is regular insulin 30 minutes before meal or rapid acting insulin just when he starts eating or take long acting insulin at the same time each day.
There is no need that he takes it too often causing hypoglycemia.

Hope I have answered the question.

He needs a definitive number to guide him. The standard guide of keeping it close to 5 on the Canadian scale is much too low, but he doesn't know how high he can let his blood sugar rise without risking all of the side effects that terrify him. Could you give me a number even if it is on the XXXXXXX scale, so I can convert that to our scale and give him some guidance? Is keeping his blood sugar at 10 to 12 too high or is that OK?

Brief Answer:
It can be 8 or 9

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
10 or 12 is to high but 8 or 9 would be OK.
