Question: My husband is currently incarcerated and has high blood pressure, acute asthma and seizures. He is going to court to get a compassionate release and I was wondering if I could pay to get a doctor to write their opinion on how he is at higher risk for COVID-19

Hello !

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

Regarding your concern, I would agree with you on the fact that your husband is at a higher risk for Covid infection complications, considering the fact that he suffers from asthma and arterial hypertension.

These two medical disorders are risk factors for complications and a poor outcome in Covid infection.

The seizures may also be exacerbated by fever and viral infections like Covid.

You should discuss with the doctor attending him in this institution about these issues, as he is the only person responsible for his health in this moment.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

I remain at your disposal for any further questions whenever you need!

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Regarding high cholesterol levels, there are not many studies which connect directly a poor Covid infection outcome and high cholesterol levels.

It is well known that high cholesterol levels can lead to atherosclerosis and increased risk for blood clotting. From the other hand, Covid infection increases the risk of blood clotting.

From the other hand, when high cholesterol levels are part of the metabolic disorder (high cholesterol levels, obesity, arterial hypertension and diabetes), there is a known high risk for Covid infection complications.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

Wishing all the best,
