Question: My husband is disoriented and balance is very off....can hardly walk without assistance. I took his blood pressure and it is 84/50. He is 53 years old and takes medicine for essential tremors that we think is causing it. Should I take him to an urgent care?

Brief Answer:
Most likely from the medication

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. It sounds like he may be taking a beta-blocker (such as propranolol) for his essential tremor, which can decrease the heart rate and blood pressure, in which case it sounds like he is having an effect from that medication, especially if his heart rate is also low and he is not having a fever.

His blood pressure is quite low, and is causing symptoms, so the safest thing would be to take him to be evaluated, probably give him IV fluids to help get his blood pressure up, and make sure the low blood pressure hasn't affected his kidneys or other organs. Another option that would be reasonable would be to give him plenty of fluids, avoid taking any other medications, and recheck his blood pressure in an hour to see if it is coming up and he is feeling better. If not, I would take him to be evaluated then.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
