Brief Answer:
Could be muscle strain or slip disc

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

It's possible that he may have developed back muscle strain. the other possibility is slip disc.

He can apply warm packs to the painful region. Avoid bending forward and lifting heavy objects.

He can take Ibuprofen if not allergic. If the pain of not reducing, he can get an xray of the spine to look for any trauma to the spine.
