Question: My husband went in last week to see an ENT due to hoarse voice for 2 mos.
Doctor saw a mass on vocal cord that looked red and swollen. He also said it looked internal and sort of big. He ordered a CT scan of vocal cords. What do you think could possibly be going on? He is 47.
Hoarseness for 2 mos with some cough.
Are vocal cords and larynx same thing?

Brief Answer:
vocal cord polyp...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

According to the description, your husband seems to be having a vocal cord polyp. Usually, the vocal cord polyp is benign in nature and the symptoms settle down once the polyp is excised. If the patient is a chronic smoker and an alcoholic, then, we need to suspect malignancy.

Yes, vocal cords are part of the Larynx.

Kindly educate your husband to maintain voice rest and avoid straining while talking. To drink frequent sips of warm water and do steam inhalation.

Hope this answers your query. I will be available for the follow-up queries.

Brief Answer:
Your husband requires Direct Laryngoscopy for further management...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

I have gone through the report and it says there is a mass above the level of the vocal cords (supraglottis) obscuring the latter. Hence, the radiologist is not able to view the vocal cords completely. Also, the report doesn't mention the extension of the mass.

In this case, further investigations have to be done. The mass has to be examined directly by the method of laryngoscopy under general anesthesia and a small chunk of the tissue has to taken and sent for biopsy. Following the biopsy report, the further management can be planned.

Hope this clarifies your doubts. rever back to me if you have any other queries.
