Question: My liver enzymes are elevated. My Dr. Wants an ultrasound for a baseline. Is he looking for something specific or because I have a fatty liver or is it to see if the liver is swollen?

Brief Answer:
Probably the doctor wants to confirm that fatty liver is the cause of elevated liver enzymes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The are many medical conditions that can cause elevation of the liver enzymes.

Fatty liver is one of the common causes which cause elevation of the liver enzymes.

Usually when liver enzymes are elevated the ultrasound is requested to confirm the cause of this symptom.

Ultrasound can evaluate liver parenchyma for fatty infiltration and is a very preferred examination to confirm the diagnosis.

Ultrasound usually shows the liver is “echogenic,” that is more dense than usual toward sound waves.

So, your doctor has requested an ultrasound for a baseline to confirm the cause of elevated liver enzymes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
