My Liver Enzymes Have Been On The Rise Since Last

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Dec 2020
Question: My liver enzymes have been on the rise since last year. I got bloodwork on 11/25/19, 6/5/20 and 11/10/20. I also had an abdominal ultrasound done On 6/23/20 to check liver but all came back well. My counts keep rising. I asked my primary doctor for a refferal to a hepatologist but she said it wasn’t that urgent and has now ordered another abdominal ultrasound. I had my gallbladder removed in 2016 but my counts were never elevated until last year. I doubt it’s fatty liver as ultrasound would have shown it. My doctor also tested for hepatitis in the most recent bloodwork and it came back negative.

I feel very lethargic and started suffering from headaches this year. I had an brain mri done and it came back clear so I’m wondering if this is all maybe connected to my rising liver enzymes.

Ive researches that besides liver issues, bone disorders and Hodgkin’s lymphoma can cause elevated liver enzymes.
-What other tests should i push for to see if this is a bone issue, lymphoma or any other possibility?
-My cholesterol has been on the high end but could this be the culprit of my elevating Liver counts?
-Should I see a hepatologist?
-What lifestyle/diet changes could i make to try and lower these counts?
I am attaching reports. Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
Nothing wrong with liver.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query,
Have seen your details and all the reports attached,
As per as liver is concerned the reports are totally fine. The mild elevation in liver enzymes is a result of hyperlipidemia (Deranged lipids and medications you must be on).
Elevation in liver enzyme is significant only when minimum of two enzymes are elevated and that too three times more then the upper side of normal range.
So in your case liver enzymes are raised due secondary cause and not due to liver pathology.

Not lets come to your queries-
Ive researches that besides liver issues, bone disorders and Hodgkin’s lymphoma can cause elevated liver enzymes-Minimum three times the upper normal limit elevation(This is what elevation means for a clinician) would be seen in any of these cancers.
1-No tests
2)Yes lipid is the culprit in your case.In addition to it you are not maintaining your vitamin D3 levels...Plus Urinary tract infection was also there(Medicines taken for various purposes even to lower blood cholesterol may cause slight elevation of liver enzymes)
3)Not required
4)Take sylimarin/Milk of thistles supplement daily for 3 months.
Food should consist of complex carbohydrates like Oat,Wheat and other grains.
Eat two bowls of fruits(seasonal) daily.
Try to avoid excessive meat/Eggs/Dairy instead take vegetarian food(home cooked).
walk at the fastest speed you can for 40 minutes a day at least 5 times a week.
Drink minimum 2 litres of water daily.
No smoking, Alcohol or junk food(you can cheat once a week).
Coenzyme q10 supplement daily for 3 months.
Omega3 fatty acids once daily for 3 months.
Sleep minimum 8 hours a day(try to sleep at 10 pm and wake up at 6-8 a.m)
Practice breathing exercises(Anulom vilom pranayama etc(you tube the name) daily.
Repeat the test after 30 days.
What are the medicines you are currently having?
What do you take for your lipids?
You anxiety levels?
Exercise/ sedantry life style?
Your current food habits?
Sexual frequency?
Any other sport you are involved in?
Smoker/Alcohol/Substance use?
Revert back.
Thanks!

Thank you for your detailed response doctor XXXXXXX I just uploaded another lab I got done on 8/4/20 that shows my vitamin D within normal range. These are the supplements I have been taking daily for about 4 months:
-Turmeric/circumin: 1000mg
-CoQ10: 100mg
-Fish oil/Omega 3: 1200mg
-B12: 1000mcg
-D3: 1000 iu's
I do not do exercise. My diet is decent, not the best but not the worst. I get enough sleep. I am not on any cholesterol medication. I also just began taking antibiotics for my UTI after this bloodwork. I do take aspirin for headaches about once a week depending on frequency of headaches.
-Putting aside vitamin D deficiency (Since my levels are normal now) and medications since i have not been on any during this past year, do you still believe my high cholesterol could be the probable culprit?

I know my levels are not insanely high, but at the rate they are increasing, if the root cause of this is not found these will continue to rise which has me worried. I have uploaded this 8/4/20 lab work. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for the query,

Yes, cholesterol is the reason for your mildly deranged liver function tests.
I would suggest you follow the suggestions given above and repeat the levels after a month again.
