My Mom Had A Large Blister On Her Inner Middle

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Mar 2021
Question: My mom had a large blister on her inner middle toe. The blister broke but it has a smooth white circle area that is painful to touch. It’s been that way for days. There is new skin coming around it. I have a picture I could send. How can I get this healed (what to use, how to bandage etc and what is it? Mom is diabetic but a1c is good.
On the other foot some how a piece of skin got ripped off of where her little toe bends. Is got pink skin. What is the best treatment to get it healed? Does it need to be moist or dry? Best bandage to do?
Should feet be soaked? If so what in water for how long? How often?

I attached a close up of the middle toe on right foot that had the blister and now this white area. Also attached is a close up of the underneath of the pinky toe left foot. She got new diabetic shoes and insoles and they are too tight. I’ve got a larger size ordered. Other toes are fine. Thank you for your help

Brief Answer:
Infected blister.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have gone through your attached report.

The white cyrcle on your mother's inner middle toe can be an infected area of the skin after the blister broke.
The pain in this case is a good sign, because it exclude a diabetic foot ulcer. The diabetic wounds are not painful because of diabetic neuropathy.

I suggest to gently wash the area with clean water.
Run the area under warm water and gently massage it with soap. Continue rinsing and washing for three to five minutes. Repeat at least twice a day

Don't use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, which can slow healing.
Don't remove the flap of skin that now is a white area.
Verify is there is pus under it.
You may cover the area with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, and a nonstick bandage.
Apply more petroleum jelly and replace the bandage as needed.

If white area do not decresse or disappear within a couple of days and your mother has Increased pain, swelling, redness, or warmth around the area than a local or even oral antibiotik may be necessary.
I suggest to consult the nearest physician for the right treatement

About the problem in the other foot,it seems like a fungal infection, cutaneus candidiasis.
It usually occurs between the two smallest toes. The infection can spread to the sole of the foot.

The solution is to keep the area clean and dry, always wear socks with shoes and wear comfortable shoes.
You can Apply an antiseptic cream (if you have any), and a clean bandage.
Changing the bandage if it gets wet or dirty.
Avoiding getting the area wet for at least 24 hours.
If the problem persist an antifungal topical can be helpful.

Hope this is helpful.
Wish you good health.

Thank you so very much! I have a couple questions.

I’ve been cutting a piece of XXXXXXX & NEPHEW ALLEVYN CLASSIC 4"X4" NON-ADHESIVE DRESSING and placing under pinky toe. This is a foam like product. And then going around with gauze. Would just gauze be better? Or is there something better for non stick?

Also with that foot mon sweats a lot. Is it ok to add something like baking soda in the sock or shoe or would that cause me even more issues?

I’ve purchased so many cotton socks. They are either not wide enough or they are too thick to fit in the shoes. Could you please give me some ideas of types or brands or companies that I could research?? Do they need to be diabetic socks?

Sorry for all the questions. I’m just wanting to make my moms feet well again. Thank you so very much!

Brief Answer:
Diabetic socks the most appropriate.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
I appologise for the late reply.

The non adhesive bandage you have used is Ok.
After the "cleaning and drying process" of the feets you can also go around with a sterile gauze but i suggets to use vaseline to avoid stinking and to alow to the damaged skin to regenerate.

Baking soda is not agod solution for feets with wounds. So i dont recommend to use it.
For this problem i suggest to wear cotton socks during warmer months for proper ventilation. Wool is a good option for winter months. Avoid nylon as this synthetic fabric can trap moisture.

Some manufacturers also make socks that draw moisture away from the skin. It is usually possible to buy moisture-wicking socks in sporting goods stores.

Other specific types of sock have ventilation panels or contain chemicals that reduce the number of bacteria on the feet, which minimizes foot moisture and odor.

The most appropriate socks for a diabetic person are "diabetic socks and diabetic shoes".
This is the solution for your mother' s feets.

Wish you all the best.

The white circle area on moms toe is finally starting to slowly flake off. Her toes are reddish so I’m concerned that may be infection although there is no heat. I’ve started using an antibiotic oniment on the area. Does the white layer need to be removed? What should I do as I treat and bandage this? Anything I can do to speed the healing? I have been soaking momma foot each am in Epsom salts and some XXXXXXX dish soap. Applying Vaseline and bandaging. I started applying the over the counter antibiotic oniment last night. Is there any over the counter things that would work to speed healing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I so want moms toe healed. What is that white area? It’s crazy it can be almost off and the next time is covered again. I uploaded a picture from this am and will upload one from tonight. Over all it’s seems better except for the redness. The area around the white area is peeling and a little red. That’s where the original blister was. Thank you very much!

Brief Answer:
The blister Area Is Ok.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I have gone through your attached reports.

I see that the blister area is in process of healing and there are not signs of a local infection.
Don't worry even the redness will gradually disappear.
Your medical interventions(feet hygene, bandages and the antibiotic ointement) are staring to produce real results.

As the new skin grows beneath the blister, the white area will slowly disappear and the skin will naturally dry and peel off. There is not need to remove the withe layer because it can be a tauma for the feet.Once the barrier is removed, the wound is open to potential invasion by bacteria and can become infected.

You should know that the age and Diabetes(the diabetic neuropathy and microangiopathy) slow down the process of wound healing and skin regeneration.
For this reason you should be patient because the complete healind process can be long.

My advice:Continue with the antibiotic ointment, feet hygene ,vaseline and local bandage. At the other side,it is very important to have a well-controled Diabetes.
I m sure that after a couple of weeks the blister will be disappeared.

Hope this is helpful.
Take care

Thank you very much! This is a relief to know it’s healing and semi normal for her diabetics and age. Yesterday am when it was more red I was afraid it was infected under that white and I soaked a small pin in rubbing alcohol and tried to break through the white area. I’m worried now that in my attempt to help mom I may of opened the toe up to trauma and the true treat of bacterial infection. I did this again last night. Then covered it with the oniment. I’ve messed up I’m afraid by not being patient and letting fear take my better judgment. What can I do to make sure this doesn’t get infected now? I’m guessing this am the white area will be covered back up. I guess that is her body protection and I thought it was a pocket of infection and needed to drain. Except I really didn’t get any drain.

Is it important on to prod and pock or pick at this area? It still painful to touch it. Once I’ve tried to get the white off it causes mom discomfort most of the day.

Do I apply the antibiotic oniment on just the white area or all over the area where the white and original blister was? Then Vaseline around that? Should I soak moms foot am and pm? Or just am? Is there anything else I should put in the water for the soak? I’ve been letting it soak 10 min. Should it be longer?

On the other foot that had fungus under the pinky toe. It’s getting better and filing in. But there is now white strips under there and side of foot. Will that change back to normal skin. I’m wondering if I’m not getting it dried enough? I’m pouring perxiode on it, then coating in tea tree oil and applying Lamisil and a powder zeasorbAF. Going around it so it doesn’t spread to other toes iodine. It had started to spread and a small area infront of the pinky. I’ve applied straight lamisil there and it seems to have stopped it. This is the foot that hurts the worst. I’ve been putting a strip of gauze over this in and attempt for it not to spread. Is this what I should do or does it need to be left in unbandaged? Am I doing too many products? Also should I be soaking this foot daily? I have not done that in fear it would spread to the other toes and foot. If I do soak this what do I put in the water? How often? I probably need to be patient with this too as there is still a small open area under there and then all the white. Do I try to get the white off? It’s very painful and itches a lot for mom. She cries wanting her feet to be back the way they was. I just feel helpless not knowing.

I’ve purchased all cotton diabetic soaks that are thinner and seem to cut down on her sweating. I change her socks 2 times per day. I’ve been washing with hot water and laundry soap. Is there something else I need to do to make sure there is nothing that can spread from the sock to the other foot etc? Also mom has diabetic shoes and inserts. How do I get the fungus out of that shoe? Will rubbing alcohol kill it? Just not sure how to clean.

Should I be letting both of her feet air some? No sock and bandage? If so how long?

Thank you so very much!!! Not enough words to express how much your help is appreciated.

Hi I’m wondering if you received my questions from yesterday? I’m sending these from my phone and the reception isn’t always the best. I’m attaching a new picture from last night and I’ve copied yesterday’s question below hoping you can answer them? Again thank you so very much for your help.

Last night the toe area including white area was very smooth. And the area around the white was lighter. Although the other toes look redder and moms feet was a little swollen. Should I be concerned? Things to do?

Yesterday questions?

Brief Answer:
Cotton diabetic socks are the best choice for your mother's feet.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again
I have reviewed all your attached photos.

The actual wound in your mother's toes looks better than the first image with the blister.
There are signs of healing and skin regeneration.

As i said,it is not recommended to touch , pick or move the white area.
The possibility of local infection is low if you have used a small disinfected pin.
Anyway don't repeat this action in the future.

As i said ,a good feet hygene, sterile bandage and a local antibiotic ointment is all your mother's feet need. If you follow these routine it is sure that the blister area will gradualy disappear.

After washing your mother's feet with an antiacterial soap,it is important to dry them with a clean towel and foot powder, or antifungal powder.Following this routine once a day and than putting a strip of gauze over the white area is all i would recommend to you.

About the other feet, the antifungal ointment(Lamisil) is the key preventin and treatement tip apart the foot hygene.(keeping your mother's feet skin clean and dry)

Take your mother's socks off periodically to let her feet air out.
So socks ,no bandage for a couple of hours during the day.

This is a healthy routine because even the skin of the feet needs to breathe and this is essential for skin regeneration.

About the socks, the cotton diabetic socks are the best choice for your mother.

Nothing can be spread form the socks to the feet if you change the socks once or twice a day and clean them with hot water and a mild detergent.

You can use baking soda to disinfect the shoes of your mother's shoes.

Hope i have clarified your doubts.
Wish you all the best.

You can use baking soda to disinfect the shoes of your mother's shoes.

Hope i have clarified your doubts.
Wish you all the best.

Hi thank you so very much! I’ve been following your recommendations on moms blister and it’s so good to see it getting better. So thankful for your help!
I have a few follow up questions.
What kind of foot powder do you recommend? Brands etc? For the foot with the blister.

The other foot with fungus under little toe- is it ok to do a daily foot soak in Epsom salts and soap? Or would that cause it spread? That foot has a hammer toe and I have trouble getting moms foot washed really good.
How long do you this fungus will last? I sure want it healed.

It seems like the issues with the toes has started some calluses. One on the bottom of the foot with fungus and on the side of the same foot by pinky toe. What is the best way to try to take care of this? Is there something I can do to help stop from forming? They are painful for mom.

Do I use lotion on moms feet or not? If so what might be best?
Thank you so very much!!! Sorry for all the questions. I just want to do it right. Appreciate your help so very much!

Brief Answer:
Natural formula of feet powder.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again
Every kind of foot powder is helpful because all these products reduce moisture and help keep your mother's feet dry.
For my patients that have feet "problems" i recommend natural products or compounds without any harsh or toxic chemicals, parabens, aluminum or GMOs.You can find a lot of feet powder brand( in internet) that have these characteristics.

Another appropriate feet powder for your mother can be Care Plus Foot Powder. These product absorbs moisture and helps to prevent other blisters. It also cools the skin and reduces that burning sensation.

For the foot with fungus,i recommend to find a power that have antifungal ingredient.Zeasorb antifungal treatement powder can be helpful to reduce the fungus problems.
You can wash you mother's feet every day.If you dry the food, aply food powder and lamisil ointement,it is sure that the fungus will disappear soon.
For the calluse in your mother toe,i recommend to file it with a rubbing stone after you soak the feets in warm water. The stone has a rough surface and can be used to rub off dead skin.In this way you can help a callus go away faster

My advice how to use the feet powder:
Dust your mother's feet with foot powder. Allow the feet to air dry before applying the foot powder and blow away the excess powder before putting on socks.

Hope this is helpful.
Best regards.

Hi thank you very much!

Is it ok to soak the foot with fungus under the little toe? Epsom salts and soap? Or would that spread if? I’m having trouble getting it dry under that toe. It seems like the lamisil stays kinda moist. I sure don’t want it spreading to rest of the foot. This one hurts mom almost all the time. And she’s not wanting to walk on it. That is not good.

Is it ok to use a diabetic lotion on feet to keep them moisturized as long as not on toes?

Thank you very much! This has all been very helpful and so appreciated! You gave me hope when I didn’t think there was any.

Brief Answer:
Diabetic dermopathy

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Yes,it is Ok to soak the foot with fungus under the little toe with warm(attention!-not hot) water and a neutral soap every day.
Than you should dry the feet with a clean cotton towel and let the feet breathe and dry in air for some min.
After this step ,you can use the feet powder and lamisil cream.
If you follow these steps, the fungal infection has no chances to spread.

Of course you can use a diabetic lotion on the skin of the feet and on the skin of all the body because the skin of diabetics need moisture and care more than persons without diabetes.(because of diabetic dermopathy)

Hope i have answered to all your questions.
Regards.

My Mom Had A Large Blister On Her Inner Middle

My mom had a large blister on her inner middle toe. How often?
