My Mother Had A Neuroquant MRI Several Years Ago Showing
Question: My mother had a neuroquant MRI several years ago showing significant signs of atrophy and possible neurodegenerative disease or related to long term high blood pressure (now controlled) I was concerned on a recent visit as to her increased loss of short term memory, child like decisions as far as health and hygiene, excessive sleepiness, possible shuffling gait. Her doctor referred her to a neurologist who appears to be in a practice that specializes in sleep and epilespy and general neurology-saw her for one visit--did no testing, said the MRI was unreliable, said my father did not notice an appreciable decline, and that it was probably due to the blood pressure, and if neurodegenerative-cannot do anything anyway--my mother is an alcoholic also and I doubt my father mentioned that--it did note in the report that she smokes (the visit was yesterday)-I know that damage done is done, but I was hoping for more help, perhaps some measurement, some way of helping to manage her decline--she is on amenda and they forgot to tell him that--I was hoping she would see a geriatric neurologist--the one they saw is supposed to be very good. I am 700 miles away
Brief Answer:
Alzheimer’s or senile dementia are possibilities.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
The symptoms and signs are more likely suggestive of age-related changes like Alzheimer’s or senile dementia.
It is basically a clinical diagnosis rather than an MRI diagnosis.
Unfortunately, it is an irreversible condition. However, you can consider drugs like Donepezil which seizes the progress of the disease.
Hope I have answered your query.
Feel free to ask further.
Thanks
