Posted on Fri, 8 May 2020
Question: My mother in law has dementia and is cared for at two residences by my sister in law and her husband Before the virus my husband helped a lot. For the past month he has not and we have been quarantined in our home. We all live in Manhattan. XXXXXXX is asking for help now and we are scheduled to meet her about 10 blocks from our home. We will walk, they will drive to the location - mother in laws apartment.
We have all been practicing social distancing. I really prefer we do not get together, but I am aslo sure my aister in law can use a break. XXXXXXX is difficult to manage.
What do you think we should or ahould not do?

Brief Answer:
Yes you can go there and take care of her

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is best to stay where ever you are. Not to travel to places.
It is better to just let them be.

But if its urgent, you can help them in some outdoor chores. You leave the groceries in garage for 1-2 days. They pick after 1-2 days. This will help control infection. Since mother has dementia and is old, she is at risk of contracting infection and fall seriously ill.

If you really need to step - in then avoid crowding. After entering their household, you take a bath, wash your clothes etc during bath. Use as much personal protection as possible in their house. Many people now have their own personal protection equipment and N95 masks. If you are using cloth masks then put some cloth to block the air entrances.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
