Question: My mother is facing a problem with some sort of allergy in her upper part of her fingers. Which is causing itching, little burns, stiffness, cracks and also observing some skin color change. This allergy is seen only on one hand(left) and on the other hand, the thumb nail is increasing from the side. Same sort of problem is on the toes.

This is mostly seen during summer season.
Please help.

Brief Answer:
Hand dermatitis with paronychia

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,

You mother seems to have eczematous dermatitis of skin of finger tips along with inflammation of nail folds (chronic paronychia). This is quite common in females engaged in household work (working for long hours with water, detergents, soap etc) and those whose occupation requires repeated washing of hands with soap and water. I suggest that she uses a moisturizer frequently and avoid doing any wet work for sometime like washing clothes, dishes etc. In addition I suggest her to use a super-potent topical steroid for finger tips e.g clobetasol propionate 0.05% cream, twice daily. For swelling on sides of finger nail she may take an oral antifungal e.g Fluconazole 150mg tablet, once a week, for 3-4 months. In addition she may apply clotrimazole lotion on the skin around the nails. These are all prescription medications and must be taken under supervision of a doctor.

Take care. Let me know if you need any more assistance.
Thnaks.

Thanks for the detailed analysis Dr. Kakkar,

For supervision of a doctor, I have also consulted a Dermatologist in my place.
Can you please have a look at the prescription and suggest to me if I can start with the treatment?

Thanks for your time and efforts.
