My Name Is XXXXXXX I Am Taking Doxycycline Hyclate 100

Question: My name is XXXXXXX I am taking Doxycycline Hyclate 100 miligram capsules. 2 a day. Started Tuesday 5/14. No problems till now (although I take a lot of other medications, so it may not even be the Doxycycline). As I was eating breakfast this morning (I had taken the doxy along with other meds before breakfast) I suddenly had instantaneous sneezing, immediate and almost explosive, three sets of two sneezes. Shortly after, I got quickly nauseous - never did vomit but was close and am just now feeling the nausea fade away after about 15 minutes. I almost never am nauseous. Could it be the doxy and if so, why would it be 3-4 days before I reacted to it?

Should I call the pharmacy? Should I stop the doxy? I'm also taking one other new drug which is a diuretic.

In medical history, it should be “wound” specialist, not “would” specialist.

Brief Answer:
Delayed reaction to Doxycycline may cause stomach upset and nausea, further detailed explanations below

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query and here is my advice:

Doxycycline may affect the stomach and cause stomach upset. Some patients may feel this with the first few doses, others may take a while before they get this.

To help with the symptoms I would advise you to take Doxycycline with food or right after food. If the stomach is not empty, the irritating effect should be less. You're already using Omeprazole which helps in preventing stomach damage.

Please also make sure you have frequent small meals during this time (4-5 small meals instead of 2-3 big ones, to prevent nausea).

If the symptoms do not improve after taking Doxycycline with food, then it might be advisable to let your doctor know.

If you develop any shortness of breath or swelling of the lips or eyes, you will need urgent medical attention.

Other causes for nausea should be considered as well so I would not advise you to stop using Doxycycline right now but only if no improvement with use after food and after you have informed your doctor.

It is only in the case of severe allergy as explained above that you would need to stop its use immediately.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
