My Niece Was Admitted With Preeclampsia Last Week. The Baby

Question: My niece was admitted with preeclampsia last week. The baby has been delivered at 24.3 weeks. The baby is stable at the present time. But my niece is still having uncontrollable high blood pressure and has started to have clonus. I don’t understand what that is. How long does it take for preeclampsia to resolve once the baby is delivered? We, as her extended family, are not able to be with her and cannot talk to her doctors. Any general information you can give about this ongoing condition will be appreciated.

Hi...
Welcome to Ask a doctor.I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX
Your niece had a chronic and high blood pressure that led to preeclampsia which usually starts in last trimester of pregnancy.
It's nice to know that baby has been delivered by a caesarian section as that is the only remedy for it.You are fortunate that the new born is doing well because usually there are complications due to prematurity like underweight, hypoglycaemia and respiratory problems due to immature lungs.
Coming back to the mother, the outlook for full recovery from preeclampsia is very good. Most women begin to improve within one to two days after delivery and blood pressure returns to normal range within the next one to six weeks.Doctors would take her on anti hypertensive medications like hydralazine and labetol(I prefer labetolol). She might receive magnesium injections if her blood pressure is sky rocketing. You have to instruct her to decrease or stop salt intake,de stress herself, keep her legs elevated while lying down and have plentiful oral water to keep herself well hydrated.
For sure, she will improve slowly as the trigger for the clinical condition has been removed (i.e.pregnancy).At the most, she will take 6 weeks.I am saying at the most.
Pre eclampsia has a very good prognosis but she has to be careful in subsequent deliveries.
Wishing you the best.
Regards
