Question: My question is I want to know why I basically never vomit. I have gotten food poisoning and not vomited but had extreme nausea and diarrhea, drank alcohol to the point of spins and being extremely intoxicated with no vomiting, and been so nauseous to the point it is unbearable so I have had to resort to forcing myself to throw up with limited success. I have also experienced dry retching in the last year. I have thrown up in the past but it is extremely rare. I want to know if something is wrong with my body? I have seen a gastroenterologist for acid reflux and asked this question but they have not given me a satisfactory answer.

Brief Answer:
Gastroparesis is an option.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

The most probable cause of not vomiting is gastroparesis the damage of the nerves that control stomach muscles. Vagus nerve can't normally transmit impulses to stomach muscles and can make difficult the transit or passage of food in intestines.
This can be damaged by diabetes or other conditions. I think this is just a casual event.
I don't believe that this situation that is happening to you is something to worry about. I think it can see just a random event and you possibly have good health and good immunity and not being sick often which lets to rare vomiting.

Hope I have answered the question the question the question, y

Hi,

I have had a endoscopy and my dr. told me my stomach does in fact move slow. He told me there is no good treatment for this issue. Although I've read gasteoparisis does cause vomiting? I have been diagnosed with IBS and experience nausea and diarrhea semi frequently. I have also experienced dry heaving where the vomit reflex happens but nothing comes out. I do not want to vomit but it scares me I cannot do it when necessary i.e drinking too much (which is not too often but it does happen) or food poisoning. Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Brief Answer:
In case of intoxication provoke it with fingers.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
It is true that gastroparesis sometimes causes vomiting but it is the only disease which can cause slow moving stomach.
In case of intoxication and drinking too much you may need to go to ER to get help.
You can provoke it with fingers.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Best regards.

Thank you for your response, although even fingers does not get much up and is quite straining. Am I supposed to understand I may be physically unable to throw up due to gastroparesis?

Brief Answer:
Not much to be done.

Detailed Answer:
You are welcome.
Possibly you may not throw up by gastroparesis but with fingers yes because it enables vomiting reflex.
Probably there is not much to be done about it.
Best regards.
