Question: My question is about a seroma I have developed. I had a left side mastectomy on Feb. 5th. About 6 days later, a painful seroma appeared under and in front of my left underarm area. On Feb. 12 they drained 60 ccs out of it. It came back. On Feb. 19 they drained 80ccs out of it. Today - Feb. 21- it's back. The fluid is clear, not infected. They tried having me wear a compression bra - that didn't help and became too painful after about 24 hours. Do you have any suggestions on how to get rid of such a thing as a seroma? How long should I expect to have to deal with this

Brief Answer:
regarding a seroma after surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

Most seromas go away on their own with compression and heat application. Apart from this, some seromas may need to be drained if they become tense and painful but ultimately most seromas stop refilling by about a month of surgery. Only rarely it may be necessary to obliterate the dead space where serous fluid collects i.e sclerotherpy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.
