Hello!

Welcome on - Ask a Doctor - service!

I carefully reviewed your uploaded medical records and would like to explain that the diameters of your abdominal aorta need to be carefully monitored.

It is true that a value of 30 mm and above is considered aneurysm, but such a value is not critical. What is more important is checking the rate of its progression: if it progresses more than 0.6-0.8 cm/year it may be associated with an increased risk of rupture (especially for large aortic diameters:greater than 5.5 cm).

It is recommended to perform a periodic evaluation of the aortic diameter (every year) with echo or better with MRI or CT scan.

In order to prevent potential aneurysm expansion it is recommended to control the aorta wall stress by controlling potential hypertension, avoid close smoking contacts.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Is it only the abdominal anerysm that needs to be looked at? Do I need to be concerned with the mildly dilated aortic vessel over close to my heart..I am reading too much.. reading that in women it tends to be worse.. is this true?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again Lisa!

Actually the aortic root and ascending aorta do not seem to represent any issue of concern. Their dimensions should be routinely measured when checking the abdominal aorta.

Whether the aortic dimensions would progress to larger values it will depend on the above mentioned issues (where hypertension and smoking are the most important components).

So relax and don't worry too much about!

In case of any further questions, feel free to ask me again.

Dr. Iliri
