My Son Has Dry Cough With Little Headech. No Fever
Brief Answer:
Kindly give few more details
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to Ask A Doctor service
I have gone through your query and understand your concern
This is probably a viral illness. If there is no fever or breathing difficulty and he is otherwise active, we need not worry.
You can give him Paracetamol 2-3 times daily to relieve headache and an antihistamine like Levocetirizine to relieve cough. I can give the exact dosage if you get back with his age and body weight.
With these measures, he should be fine in 3-4 days. If no relief by then, or if he develops additional symptoms, we can evaluate further
I hope this answer will help
Let me know if I can assist you further

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome back
As there is no fever, he is active and the cough is dry, nothing to worry.
Dry cough can persist for 5-7 days after a viral respiratory infection. Let the causative agent be anything, if fever has subsided, he is active, the cough is dry and there is no fast breathing/breathing difficulty, nothing to be worried. Just continue Levocetirizine and cough syrup for another 3-5 days.
There is no harm in taking a Vitamin D tablet and a multivitamin capsule once daily for few days, but not necessary as he is already in the resolution phase. Avoiding cold air/dust can help to reduce cough.
In short, there is nothing to worry- stay relaxed.
I hope this answer will help

Brief Answer:
Few more details would be helpful
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Welcome to Ask A Doctor service
Happy to hear that all issues except cough has resolved.
As I said already, a dry cough can persist for 7-10 days from the onset of illness. Only if it is persisting beyond that, or if it is disturbing his sleep, we need to intervene.
Anyhow, if you can give few more details, I can advise accordingly:
1. Is the frequency of cough(number or coughs/day) static, decreasing or increasing as days passes?
2. Is it disturbing his sleep?
3. Is the cough more at night/early morning, or same throughout the day?
4. Any history of allergy or asthma in the past?
Kindly get back with details, so that I can guide you better

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thank you for the details, and sorry for the delay
From the details given, it is clear that the cough is not from an ongoing infection or allergy, but just indicates an irritated/inflamed airway mucosa following the viral infection. This irritation will take some time to settle and no drugs are needed apart from an antihistamine and cough suppressant which he is already getting.
In such cases, if the cough is unduly prolonged and wet to hear(sounds like a lot of phlegm inside), I used to give a short cover of antibiotics, like Azithromycin 500mg tablet once daily for 3-5 days, but this is a prescription drug.
Few things that can be useful include: Avoid exposure to dust/smoke/cold, suck on a hard candy, take 1 teaspoon honey 3 times daily and drink enough fluids(hydration helps to loose out secretions)
I hope this answer will help
