Question: My son has had 2 MRI's and multiple labs completed. the last MRI shows inflammation around his spine. His ESR lab came back at a 69 mm/h and his CRP was at a 5.79 MG.dl He has a history of back pain. He does currently have 2 kidney stones. The Drs say this is not a contributing factor to his back pain. Upon standing his legs become numb.

He is on the way to see the neurosurgeon. Could this be potentially serious?

Brief Answer:
About disc herniation of the spine;

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
I can understand your concern regarding to your sons's health.
The back pain and the numbness in the feet can be due to disc herniation of the spine , but it does not explain high ESR and PCR.
The ESR is to high and in these cases infection or rheumatological diseases should be excluded.
The clinical examination and lab exams will help in finding out the cause of high ESR.
To say how serious the intervention of the spine is, the level of the herniation and rather the spine canal is narrowed should be known.
Anyway, in general it is not a serious suergery but in most cases results inefficient.
Hope the information will help.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
