Question: My son is 1 years old and on July 17 he started vomiting . He only did it twice and then it stopped for a day . Then he started having vomiting again and Diahriah on the 19th... took him to the ER and the doctor said it’s probbaly a stomach virus . Gave zofran and within the next day he no longer committed now few days later he has had no diariah and has been completely healed for a couple days now .. all of the sudden he just started throwing up in his crib and vomiting several times after and has had trouble going to bed all week . He has had bad gas that’s mells horrible and hiccups before the vomiting started in his sleep..: he started taking a a commercial thickener called simply thick yesterday . Everyone in my house has also had diarrhea though too. Could a virus go away like that and come right back few days after ??? Or is this NEC forming from simply thick?

Brief Answer:
Looks like viral diarrhea - do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting on Ask A Doctor.

It seems your kid is having viral diarrhoea. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better.

Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).

Regarding diet - You can use cerelac...any flavour will do. Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements & ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges & soups.

I wish your kid a speedy recovery. If you need any future medical consultation and suggestions, I will be glad to help. You can approach me at the following link.

I’m taking him to doctors now again . It’s been over 7 days he has been vomiting on and off. All his symptoms went away like 6 days ago and now he’s throwing up again and everything . But he hasn’t been sleeping good either from teething and probably the stomach issues ... can a virus do that? Vommiting return after 6 days?

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on viral diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Yes - it is common in viral illness and during teething - it is common to have such viral diarrheas as the kids tend to keep anything in mouth please.
