My Stomach Seems To Contract And Sometimes Even Feel Empty

default
Posted on Sat, 11 May 2019
Question: My stomach seems to contract and sometimes even feel empty even after I eat a full meal. I lose weight, sometimes 5/6 pounds at a time for no reason and it%E2%80%99s hard for me to gain weight eventhough I try to eat or take high protein foods.

I am 56 years old, 6%E2%80%991%E2%80%9D but only about 150....have always been athletic, don%E2%80%99t smoke or drink. I have asthma, so I take Breo 200mg and Montelukast daily....I take Amlodipine 10mg for my BP...and I was taking Omepazole for my stomach...now I take Zantac twice a day. Supplements include...a liquid B-12, Probiotic (Active Restore), and a superfood drink every morning with Meta-Mucil.

I seem to lose muscle mass when I lose weight unintentionally and I don%E2%80%99t know why my stomach feels as if it%E2%80%99s shrinking eventhough my appetite remains solid...

Brief Answer:
Probably bloating, follow the advice below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms seem to be related to bloating.

I already reviewed the medications that you are already taking.

The bloating can be a side effect of the probiotics that you are already taking.

So, I recommend to avoid the probiotics for a period of time.

Instead, I recommend to eat a fiber rich diet and drink a lot of liquids.

I also recommend taking Simethicone medication to relieve the bloating three times a day.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

I mentioned that my stomach seems to be shrinking or getting smaller, that sounds opposite of bloating. Also I mentioned that I lose weight eventhough my appetite hasn’t been compromised. What can I do to keep weight on a nd to open my stomach?

Brief Answer:
Follow up query explained below in detail.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

Thank you for clearing up your symptoms for me.

There are many medical conditions that can cause weight loss and stomach contraction.

One of the common causes in our daily practice can be hyperthyroidism.

So, I recommend to check the thyroid hormone levels.

I also recommend doing a blood test and a stool test to test for any possible infection such as parasite infection.

Meanwhile, I recommend keeping eating a healthy diet.

You may add some calories in your meals to gain the weight that you have lost.

I suggest to eat several small meals and avoid drinking water before meals.

I recommend to take a vitamin C supplement which boost the immune system.

Feel free to contact me again after the examinations.

Take care dear,

Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi
