My Sympathetic Nervous System Is In Overdrive. I'm 48, No

Question: My sympathetic nervous system is in overdrive. I'm 48, no history of heart disease, healthy weight, non-smoker. I do have reflex sympathetic dystrophy due to right arm paralysis, but it's localized and I've had that condition for 25 years. Onset was rapid and started about 7 weeks ago). Tachycardia untreated resting 127, hypertension untreated 180/100 (tension solved by a beta blocker 110/60 tach somewhat resting 90), anorexia, insomnia, hyperhydrosis. Thyroid storm ruled out by blood test. I've ordered a catecholamine test but haven't gotten the results back. That's the upregulators covered. Next I'm thinking GABA insufficiency or a GABAAr problem that could be treated with a GABA reuptake inhibitor. Is there anything I'm missing, what other causes for disautonomia should I be tracking down?

Brief Answer:
Cardiac conditions to consider first.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to " Ask a Doctor " service.

I have read your query and here is my advice.

Since you experienced high blood pressure, dysautonomia is unlikely the condition that is causing your symptoms.

GABA deficiency also is a condition that manifests since the neonatal period.

On the adulthood, the system are mostly psychological in character.

In my opinion, in your case, first is necessary to evaluate any cardiac disorder that may cause your symptoms.

For this, is necessary a complete cardiac work up, electrophysiologic evaluation and an evaluation by a Cardiologist.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

would it change your thinking if I added that there was a long history of alcohol use that ended 6 month ago?

Brief Answer:
Alcohol use also may cause such symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Alcohol abuse may lead to autonomic nervous system dysfunction, so, this is also possible in your case.

I still think that conditions mentioned in our previous discussion should also be considered and evaluated further.

Hope this helps.

Take care.
