My Wife Had Been Asked To Do A Thyroid Uptake
Question: My wife had been asked to do a thyroid uptake scan as her routine health checkup showed minor hyperthyroidism. Her free T3 n T4 also reported higher numbers. Endocrinologist asked us to not to do anything and just wait n watch and do a retest after 2 months. He also asked us to do a uptake scan just to see the thyroid functioning. For the uptake scan, the technician asked her to have lunch first before she can perform the thyroid scan. Is it normal to have food before this test?
Brief Answer:
It is better to avoid food two hours prior to the test.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
It is recommended to avoid food two hours prior to the test, it is because traces of iodine present in the food might interfere the results. You have to avoid sea foods and foods with high salt content.
However you can have a iodine free diet prior to to test

Thank you for the answer. Yes we told the doc or technician that she had food 2 hrs earlier. But she insisted us to have lunch. Do you see any valid reason for that? And she hadnt mentioned anything about iodine free food. What might be the impact on report? What should we do about this? If possible, please give a detailed answer. Thank you again
Brief Answer:
No role for a compulsory meal.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
There is no reason for a compulsory meal before thyroid uptake study. Most of the institutions prefer nil per mouth two hours prior to the procedure,
However nothing much will happen with normal lunch prior to the procedure. Only the foods with high iodine content like sea foods may alter the results slightly.
In your nothing will happen and you can rely on the results,
Wishing all the best,
Thanks
