My Wife Has A Low GFR, Around 24, And Is
Question: My wife has a low GFR, around 24, and is in the care of Renal Specialist. But getting an appointment is difficult any time soon. Of late, last month or so, she has been itching all over but no rash. She has tried all kinds of topical stuff. It is worse in the evening. She recently had an IV with Rocephin, 1 gm/day to treat a long standing strep infection in her knee. Ordinarily she takes Keflex but the DR thought they should try an IV. She quit the IV after just a few days.. She has seen several medical providers, including a dermatologist and GP, none of whom have a solution. Could the IV have affected her Kidneys and that is causing the itch? Previously she had no problem with Keflex, nor itching.

Brief Answer:
i/v antibiotic can cause itching
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
She was treated with i/v ceftriaxone for infection . this injection can lead to itching but it should go away after stopping this injection over next few days.
this injection usually does not cause any kidney disease . the itching caused by this injection may be due to allergic reaction and not because of its effect on the kidney.
kidney disease by itself predisposes for itching as it causes dryness of skin and if calcium phosphorus balance is disturbed it can contribute to itching.
what you can do is use anti allergic medication like cetrizine or benedryl at night and moisturizing body lotions twice a day in adequate amounts all over body. do not itch with nails or comb . it will aggravate the itching. use a cotton cloth or handkerchief to slowly rub the area, better still apply more lotion in that area. do not massage the lotion just apply it.
best wishes
