Painful, Heavy Bleeding, Blood Clots, Weakness, Night Sweats, Chills, Swollen Breasts, Negative Pregnancy Test

Question: hi, I am woman,31 yrs of age, and I am in my period at the moment. Experiencing very unusual symptoms for me. I am in terrible pain, very heavy bleeding for 3 days now, big bright red clots on my towels and in toilet. I also feel very weak, I have night sweats and chills that started about 1 week before I got my period. With about 3 weeks before period, my breasts were swollen and very sore, hard to touch, and felt nauseous. On sunday I had a pregnancy test and it was negative. Few years ago I ended up going to A&E on two occasions, but there I was told by nurses that it is normal.
Back then I did not experience sore breasts for such long time, night sweats and chills. Should I take a private consultation? Should I be worried?
You might want to know about the fact that I never used contraception and I have never been pregnant. Is my fertility linked to those problems?

Dear,
Thank you for writing in.

I've read your post a couple of times and I’m trying to understand a little deeper than what is obvious. Please follow what I have to say.....

As I understand this is a very heavy and painful period. The terrible pain you talk about is in low abdomen and back?
Although you have chills and night sweats, have you recorded any temperature with a thermometer?
The breasts are sore and painful and other than painful period and painful breasts there is no pain in any other part of the body?
This is the third time a similar thing has happened over last few years.

Having understood this, may I suggest that you take an over-the-counter pain killer or an anti-spasmodic tablet; give good support to the breasts by pulling up the bra or tightening it and keeping the bra on at night too; don't 'handle' the breasts too often other than to check whether there is any discharge from the nipple and report to me if it is.

Drink PLENTY of fluids; eat some good nourishing food and a hot cup of coffee. You may also like to use a hot bag over the abdomen to ease the pain.

Evening primrose oil is usually available over the counter. This helps greatly in breast pains. Some iron tablets and vitamins also help.

Listen to some calming music and go out shopping with friends.

One question from you, as I read between the lines: Are you deeply upset that you have never been able to conceive? Please allow this question to sink in - the understanding and solution to your problems may follow.

If possible, it may be good to check out your Haemoglobin and blood counts.

If the situation worsens over next few hours, please visit the hospital emergency in your area.

All the best.
