Please Opine On Possibility Of Further Complications In Both, Splenectomy
Infection by capsulated bacteria is major complication post splenectomy
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your query on 'Ask A Doctor' service.
The doctor's certificates mention that both the patients - Mr XXXXXXX Kapadia and Ms XXXXXXX Kapadia have undergone splenectomy or surgical removal of the spleen.
The reason for splenectomy is mentioned to be hereditary spherocytosis, a condition wherein the red blood cells (RBCs) have an abnormal spherical shape, whereas normal red blood cells are bi-concave.
The spherical shape of RBCs makes them difficult to mould themselves while passing through narrow blood vessels like that of the spleen.
Thus, these RBCs start disintegrating or bursting while passing through narrow spleen channels.
Thus, splenectomy is done to decrease the destruction of RBCs and hence prevent anaemia or reduction of RBCs.
Since the condition is hereditary, all the family members should be screened initially by complete blood count and peripheral blood smear.
The major complication of splenectomy if susceptibility to infections by certain capsulated bacteria like streptococcus, pneumococcus etc.
These infections can be prevented by vaccination against these infections.
I suggest you consult your physician for further prescription of vaccination.
Thanks and take care
