?Prognosis,complications,recurrence of Giant cell tumor
Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX
I have gone through your query/report and here is my opinion.
Giant cell tumors (GCT) are formed by collection of multi nucleated abnormal cells called giant cells or histiocytes.
Giant cell tumors exclusively occur at the end of the long bones (epiphysis) directly next to the joints.
They are non cancerous but are very aggressive in nature.
Prognosis of GCT is good if treated aggressively and with a multidisciplinary approach.
Surgical modality of treatment is surgical removal, extended curettage, bone grafting and local reconstruction.
Non surgical treatments include radiotherapy (Tumors that can't be removed surgically can often be controlled and sometimes destroyed with radiation therapy),tumor embolization and injectable medications (like Zoledronate and monoclonal antibodies)against tumor cells.
Outcome of treatment depends on many factors...,,like age, status of parathyroid ,size of tumor, location of the tumor, staging of tumor and method of treatment used.
Your clinician would be in a better position to reveal the details.
There are high possibilities of GCT recurrence so patient needs regular follow up and screenings.
Complications include pathological fractures, bone infection (which is deep seated and difficult to treat),micro embolization of giant cells to lungs, lung failure and recurrence of primary tumor.
Hope that I have answered your query.
If you have any doubts, please let me know.
Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
