Please Recommend Any Better Medicine That Can Help Me With My Narcolepsy Type 2
Question: Hello doctor, i have been diagnosed with Narcolepsy Type 2 so doctor suggested me Modafinil 100 as a start however it failed to work as i get constant yawns after taking it & it infact remains for hours until the drug effect wears off. I also have on-off sleep onset insomnia issue, along with idiopathic RLS so for that i take gabapentin which works for both but offcourse not EDS.
Please recommend any better medicine that can help me with my narcolepsy type 2 symptom as i am unable to function throughout day due to that, i feel lethargic throughout day. After waking up fresh initially, within an hour my eyes start getting sleepy, puffy and heavy but my body isn't tired at all however there is some kind of sleep attack in central part which makes me feel like to lie down & even after lying down , there is no guarantee that sleep will come, it is just more of a deep drowsiness most of the time but it remains throughout daytime till evening. One evening sets in, automatically everything gets normalized and i feel activeness again so i don't understand what's wrong?
This has been going on since several years now even before i did not had RLS. All my blood tests are normal including thyroid, free thyroid etc.

Brief Answer:
Ritalin may be appropriate in your case.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for your questions.
I have read your new question.
Since Modafinil isn't working well, you can use Ritalin (Methylphenidate) for narcolepsy type 2.
It has a different mechanism of action regarding Modafinil and its efficacy has been seen with excessive daytime sleepiness with the dose of 5mg/day.
Discuss with your Doctor these issues.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks doctor, how can it be easily distinguished between sleep apnea and narcolepsy? I haven't had any sleep studies so far but I have received mixed diagnosis which have made me confused too. I rarely snore as confirmed by my family members, also offcourse i don't usually sleep very deep.
Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
I have read your new question.
As you mentioned in your query, a sleep study is the examination of choice in your case, in order to achieve a correct diagnosis.
Snoring does not mean necessarily that you have sleep apnea, but these conditions may coexist.
Discuss with your Doctor about the possibility of having a sleep study done.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
