Question: I have a hard time with getting things done especially under duress. When I am most stressed, I procrastinate to extremes. How can I manage this?

Important aspects of your query are:
•     43 year old male
•     Complaints of: procrastination and difficulty in doing work during stress

Your problems appear due to excessive stress in life. Some time due to poor stress management normal stress of life perceived excessive.

Following causes can lead to excessive perceived stress:
-Excessive work load at work place
-Stress in personal life
-Anxiety and Depression: Many time people develop anxiety and depression (psychiatric illness). These people perceive normal life stress excessive. In such case help from psychiatrist will require.

Common symptoms of anxiety and depression which may or may not be present in your case: anxiety, low mood, nervousness, restlessness, mild irritability, excessive worry regarding own health, tremor, muscle spasm (lead to pain in multiple parts of body), heaviness in body, easy fatigability, headache, sleep disturbance, palpitation and dry mouth.

Following stress management steps will help you:
-Practice time management
-Be prepared for unexpected problems
-Prioritize and Take control of your "to do" list
-Learn relaxation exercises: daily morning walk and breathing exercise
-Rehearse and practice stressful situations
-Learn practical coping skills: Problem solving
-Decrease negative self talk.
-Learn to feel good with a workable result – Don’t be a perfectionist.
