Recently, Have Been Experiencing On Occasion (1-2 Days A Week

Question: Recently, have been experiencing on occasion (1-2 days a week for 2 months) a dollop of mucus when I urinate that comes out my rectum. That mucus will have some red in it--tiny drop. Lately this might happen 1-2 times a day. About a month ago it was happening 3-4 times a day.

I wondered if diet was causing it, so I cut back on fried food and tomatoes. It didn't happen as often. In the last few days I've eaten more tomatoes/ketchup. But this mucus will happen the next day after I've eaten tomatoes so I don't know if that is the cause since it is so soon after consuming tomatoes/ketchup.

I'm wondering what a Doctor thinks? I'm planning to go to my doctor about it after this virus threat is well beyond is, maybe XXXXXXX because I'm 64. I'm a very very healthy 64 (only take thyroid meds and hormone replacement. Exercise 4-5 days--bike, pilates, walking. Weight 122, 5'4"
Thank you!
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Probably colitis, some examinations are needed for further evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.

A small amount of mucus in your stool is usually nothing to be concerned about.
It is typically present in a healthy stool, and is normally only in very small amounts that mostly go unseen with the naked eye.
If the mucus is red it can be related to many medical conditions.
One of the common conditions is colitis which is an inflammation of the colon.
Other possible conditions can be hemorrhoids or an anal fissure.
A stool test and a colonoscopy is needed for further evaluation.
A physical examination by a proctologist is also needed.
Meanwhile, I suggest to eat a healthy diet and avoid food that can trigger the symptoms.

Hope my answer was helpful.
