Question: Hello Doctor,
I have done my Lasik surgery a few years back and generally I have dry eyes and also since I look at computer screen long hours my blink rate is low. I usually use eye drops like tear plus or Optive regularly, but i'm still seeing dryness and it does not seem to help much. I was reading online and I saw a recommendation to use Eyeganics and Avenova which helps destroy the bacteria that is causing the dryness, but these are not available in my country. Could you please recommend something that I can use regularly and get better relief from dryness? Thank You.

Brief Answer:
Use lubricating gel

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Since most of nerve endings supplying the cornea are cut during Lasik laser, as a rule we insist upon use of lubricating eye drops for at least six months.

The resultant dryness in your case seems to be continuing and as you have not been relieved by routine lubricating drops, there are two ways you can help dryness.

One is use of lubricating gels. They have a longer lasting effect and seem to improve symptoms in patients who are not helped by lubricating drops.

Frequent blinking automatically helps in keeping the cornea wet.
Use multivitamins for a short duration, if it helps, then make it a point to continue. If multivitamins do not help your situation, they will be beneficial for general body helps. Bacterial growth is responsible for dryness in a significantly small percentage of patients, so we should aim at routine measures that can help you.
