Question: Several weeks ago I noticed my husband seemed to be getting a “hunched forward” appearing neck. I called it to his attention and he started trying to correct his posture. Ever since then he has been having intermittent neck spasms. His range of motion seems ok, no numbness or weaknesses his arms. Rest helps but when he has to do anything that requires him to look down he has a neck spasm. He is in good health but is on a statin. Any suggestion?

Please see detalied answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Spasm in spine muscle is a common probelm encountered by people .The probelm can be related to muscles or the spine .
1: Spine probelm that is common in such pupulation is Cervical Spondylosis. Here pain and spasm in neck occur due to age related degenertive changes in vertebrea ( spine bones in neck) which compress on the nerves exiting the spine causing pain and discomfort .It genrally produces pain with neck movements that's is shooting pain and may go to either of the shoulders or hands .May also cause numbness nd weakness if severe, though not commonly .In your case cervical spondylosis is unlikely but still possible .
2: Muscles probelms itself are not uncommon. They can go into spasm specially with bad postures. They may also give such problems. Dystonia ( medical term ) are abnormal muscles spasm that may occur with drugs or some times for no reason.

In both cases most of the times the Problem is not a serious one , specially nothing sounds alarming in yours case .Correctng posture , massage and physiotherapy may aleviate the probelm .

I would personally advise to take him to the doctor just to examine him and may need an Xray of the neck .Also to chek the mucle enzyme called CPK to rule out any musle problem caused by statin. Role of physiotherapy should not be underestimated here . Rarely MRI of spine is needed .
Hopes I have answered your question. Please feel free to ask anything else you need to know in this regards .
kind Regards
Dr Rahman
