Should I Be Concerned For Multiple Scans?
Question: Hi am concerned about my almost 5 yo who received an unnecessary ct scan of the brain for a fall. She had hit her head the previous night and had a goose egg and was ok but vomited the following morning. We went to the er scan was done. Her mom is deaf and wouldn’t accept my explanation of concern for the radiation. It was a pediatric dose and she only went in the machine 1 time instead of 2 very short time in there, the tech was aware of my concern! He said he was suppose to scan her twice but he only did it once. Is this one scan something to be concerned about. Everything I read talks about long term affects. Is this concern for multiple scans? I feel so bad for this I keep thinking about it and having fear over it! I’m thinking a radiologist would know and the things I’ve read may not be up to date! Please help if u can and thanks!
Brief Answer:
If 1 CT brain scan is done then no significant radiation risks
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.
It is known that 2 or fewer CT scans done for a child below 11 years of age is relatively harmless from radiation risks and there is medical literature to support this. As your child has got 1 CT scan done for the brain then there is no reason to panic.
Please do not hesitate to ask any more questions.
