Should I Wait For At Least 2 Months Before I

default
Posted on Sun, 3 May 2020
Question: Should I wait for at least 2 months before i see a neurologist for follow up or I should just concentrate on my anxiety?

Again so this looks like a combination of TMJ and anxiety and not even close to MND?

They did not do my bulbar muscles (emg), am I still clear of ALS?

For the last 2 months I have this pressure on the roof of my mouth, nose around ears and behind eyes/forehead while talking. It makes talking weird. No one has noticed anything wrong with my speech. The pressure sometimes feels like stiffness inside the cheeks and also jaw pressure. Brief Answer:
Seems not a neurological condition.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor " service.

I have read your query.

In my opinion, there is no reason to think about MND in your case.

Symptoms you describe are not typical for any MND type, as you mentioned yourself, temporomandibular joint problems may cause these symptoms.

I would add to the list of the possible conditions sinusitis, it may cause problems with the speech perception noticed by you.

Anxiety in the other hand, may worse these symptoms.

So, I don't think you need to see a Neurologist soon because the condition seems not of neurological origin.

You can discuss with you primary care Doctor instead for your issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

I also have on and off dysphagia like feels like something sticks to my throat, but this comes and goes. Can TMJ cause this?

Also have feeling of excess saliva and mucus in mouth and throat, what could be causing this?

When I talk I often feel mucus in my throat or tightness in my throat, so not sure what is causing that.
I had an emg done in January where in the neurologist did 10 muscles including 1 paraspinal muscle. But he did not do any bulbar muscle and thats why I am scared.

So should I go and see a neurologist like in XXXXXXX which would be 5 months from the 1st neurologist visit and emg?

Welcome back.

The symptoms and issues that you describe point more towards inflammation of the pharyngeal area.

Again, sinusitis is a possible explanation, so, I think you should be evaluated further in this direction.

I don't think, for now, there is necessarily an EMG is required since the previous one didn't show anything neurological.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

I sometimes get tightness in the roof of my mouth like for example I get tightness in the picture attached.

1.) Not sure if thats due to TMJ or something neurological, could this be sign of muscle weakness or something like MS?

I am really afraid because of that, it sometimes makes my speech like slur (no ones noticed anything though).

2.) Is this neurological, this has be going on for the last 2 months like on and off (its not constant, but get this every alternate day).

3.) I dont know what to do wait for like 2-3 months and wait to see if it goes away or get an appointment like the next available appointment?

4.) What I am saying is it common with TMJ? Also one more thing, when I say certain words or certain sounds like "GOOGLE" I feel pressure on the roof of the mouth/nose and even forehead.

Also feel like the back of the nose leading to the start of the throat is inflamed or filled with mucus, but again this sensation comes and goes.

I am praying none of these are neurological. What do you think?

Hello again.

Neurological conditions such as MND have a tendency to worsen with time.

Muscles atrophy and subsequent fatigue are among symptoms that worsen gradually.

Exessive mucus may indicate an inflammation of the pharynx, sinuses, etc. but is not a common feature of MND.

So, I don't think yours is a neurological condition, I suggest you wait and see how it is going, you can see a Neurologist if there is any worsening of your symptoms.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

I have attached images of where the pressure is on my face and throat. I have a feeling of inflammation in my throat or like excess mucus.

So all of the things I have described, is there any hint of anything bad or neurological?

Yes I will wait for 2-3 months and see if this goes away or my symptoms get better.

Welcome back.

I saw the illustrations about the location of the symptoms, the EMG report and the video that you uploaded.

There is no weakness or asymmetry of your uvula and soft palate, so, there are no muscular or nerve problems.

The pharynx seems a little bit inflamed, but it is difficult to be precise only looking at the video.

In conclusion, for now, there is no reason to support a neurological condition diagnosis, including those mentioned by you.

Hope this helps.

Take care.

1.) So what could be causing the pressure/stiffness in soft palate, cheeks region?

2.) Can TMJ affect speech due to the facial pressure?

3.) Can TMJ cause tongue biting or is it anxiety?

Welcome back.

Anxiety may play an important role in such symptoms.

It may aggravate symptoms caused by other conditions such as sinusitis, etc.

Disorders affecting TMJ may cause a sense of pressure, tongue bitting, etc.

The voice also may be affected, but in your case, it is only an impression of yours, since others don't notice any change.

Hope I helped you.

Brief Answer:
I think MND is excluded for now.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

In my opinion, at this moment, there is no reason to think about MND.

The meeting with the Neurologist also does not seem necessary recently.

The pressure may be caused by inflammation (swelling) of the pharynx.

Hope I helped you.

Greetings.

Do you mean or trying to imply that theres a chance I do have it? I am sorry for asking you all these questions.

I just want to ask you do you think theres a slightest of doubt that this could be MND or other neurological stuff?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

It is okay, you can ask as many questions as you have.

It is my opinion, in your case, chances of having MND are equal with those of other people, your symptoms don't point towards any neurological condition.

Hope this helps.

Greetings
