In 2006, the ACIP ( advisory committee for immunisation practices- US immunisation organisation) recommended that the vaccine should be given to all persons over the age of 60 even if there was a previous history of shingles.

The vaccine would reduce the chance of a recurrent attack and also reduce the chance that you would develop post herpetic neuralgia.
Post herpetic neuralgia is the pain syndrome that is associated with shingles, it can sometimes be difficult to treat.

Summary: the recommendations are that the vaccine should be given even if there is a history of previous shingles episodes
