Since Friday (four Days) I Have Had A Red Swollen

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Oct 2019
Question: Since Friday (four days) I have had a red swollen bump on my right buttock. I assumed it was a spider bite. It came on rapidly. Every morning it is a light pink and not that painful but still swollen. By end of day after sitting on it throughout the day it is dark red and more painful. The size has never really increased but the swelling/pain increases throughout each day. It does not seem to have gotten better.

Today I notice a whitehead (attaching picture). The total size is 2 inches x 3 inches. The swelling is often slightly larger.

I am concerned do I need to seek treatment? Is it a spider bite? boil? blood clot?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
spider bite or infection of sebaceous gland.not blood clot.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query with attached photo image and here is my advise.

* As there is redness involving the area with pain, underlying inflammation
is most likely due to possible spider bite or infection of sebaceous gland of
the area.
It is very unlikely to be due to blood clot.

* Guidelines for better recovery

- Local application of ice pack 5 minutes each 3 times a day.
- Though ibuprofen will provide pain relief for some hours, you need
prescription of antibiotics from your doctor ( to resolve it faster and
prevent further spread of infection ).
- Avoid continuous sitting over hard surface, long drives which will compress
the underlying nerves and more pain will be an issue.

Wish you best recovery.
Thank you.

Thank you Dr. Bhagyesh,

I have uploaded a new picture "0000.png" for your review. It looks like the main whitehead popped this morning and there was slight bleeding. I cleaned up the spot with hydrogen peroxide and applied some anti-biotic ointment and then wrapped in bandages.

Does your diagnosis remain the same?

Thank you!

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
I have seen your second image showing the white head.

* The diagnosis of the infected sebaceous gland is same as the white spot is
confirmatory of the same.

Though hydrogen peroxide and sterile dressing will provide local action, I still recommend systemic medications looking to the tissue redness in surrounding area for faster, smoother recovery.

Thank you.
