Question: So I have been feeling tired all the time lately. Like it's not as if I stay up all night or anything, I get 8-10 hours of sleep each night, and no matter how much sleep I get I'm always exhausted. I have been taking a multivitamin becuase my diet isn't the best. I live in a remote mountain area, and the food is not great, which h is why my diet is not the best. I now feel like I can hardly go through a day without taking a nap or wanting to go back to sleep. What could cause this? And how do I start feeling better?

Brief Answer:
Some tests are recommended to determine the cause of your fatigue

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

Feeling tired is a very general symptom and may be caused by many conditions. If you have been feeling so tired that you can not go through a day and this has been for more than 3-4 weeks then very likely you need some tests to rule out certain conditions:

- CBC to rule out anemia
- TSH and FT4 to rule out thyroid problems
- basic metabolic profile (fasting glucose, electrolytes, and creatinine, ALT, AST, bilirubin, lipids, ERS, etc)
- a thorough physical examination needs to be done by your doctor to listen to your heart and lungs, check for enlarged lymph nodes, etc.

According to the results of these tests, the doctor will decide on the possible cause and needed treatment.

If all the tests come out normal the doctor may also need to screen you for depression, especially in case you're having any low mood.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
