So I've Been Dealing With GERD For A Week After
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: So I've been dealing with GERD for a week after several months of not dealing with it prior. I really just want to speak with someone regarding my symptoms which include stomach ache, minor heartburn, and breathing issues. I've been taking over-the-counter nexium for 8 days now and I plan on finishing the 14 day plan to see how things go. The first time I took nexium, It pretty must relieved me of my problems before I finished the medication to its entirety.

Brief Answer:
The symptoms are typical of GERD.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
The symptoms you have mentioned are typical of GERD.
Most of the cases managed effectively with lifestyle modifications and antacids.
You can continue nexium( esomeprazole) for six weeks, two weeks treatment may not be effective in most of the cases.
Avoid spicy foods and reduce the caffeine as it will aggravate the reflux and worsen the symptoms. You can sleep in a slightly head up position to prevent reflux. The symptoms will be more in patients with obesity and you have to lose weight if you are obese.
You can continue all your routine medicines without any concerns.
Hope I have answered your query.
Thanks

So this esomeprazole has been working very well for heartburn. I don't really recall the last time I suffered from heartburn... now I just have the stomach aches and trouble breathing each day. Will the medication also neutralize the stomach acid? Also I've been drinking alkaline water recently. Will that help?

Brief Answer:
Esomeprazole reduce the acid production.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The esomeprazole reduce the acid production rather than neutralising it.
No need to take alkaline water.
Continue esomeprazole for symptomatic relief. You can take antispasmodics like hyoscine(available ove the counter) for pain relief.
If pain persists an ultrasound has to be taken to rule out other causes.
thanks

I think this will be my last question. You told me already that it is ok to take the nexium for 6 weeks... but I've read that you shouldn't take nexium for more than 14 days(2 weeks) at a time within a 4 month span. Is that true?
My symptoms seem to be improving but I'm still suffering from stomach pains. Breathing issues seem to be going away
