Question: So a couple days ago, I noticed that when I urinate it burns. I haven’t had any other symptoms, but would love something to ease that pain. Pretty sure it’s an STD, but would love help with that.

Brief Answer:
Most possible urine infection but can be an STD too.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using "Ask a Doctor" service.

Burning urinating can be mostly a urinary tract infection. There is some chance it is an STD in this case you should also have other symptoms like discharge with smell or pain during sex.

I would suggest to consider a urine analyse. If it comes positive you need to take an antibiotic. First choice usually is trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole 960mg twice per day for 3 days.

If you are sure you have an STD, you can treat them empirically. Usually it is given a cure with 3 antibiotics to cover the most common STDs. Single dose of 250mg of injectable Ceftriaxone to cover gonorrhea, 3 doses of Azithromycin 500mg 1 per day to cover Chlamydia, and Metronidazole 500mg to cover trichomonas (all these are prescription based medications).

Drink plenty of water so you can urinate more often.
Your partner should take the treatment too.

Hope this is helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Dr. Klarida Papaqako,

Do I need to go to an in-person facility to get a prescription for the STD cause I’m thinking it’s more so that. Just unsure of what it could be.

Brief Answer:
If possible better go do a urine analyse.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the follow up question.

Yes, you most probably cannot take antibiotics without a prescription from a local doctor. So if you say them "I have pain in urination", should be enough reason for them to let the appointment as soon as possible. In males the urinary tract infections should ve treated quite fast. There they can probably do an urine analyse and determine if you have one or if they needed to give treatment for the possible STDs.

I hope I answered your question. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns.

Kind regards, Dr. Papaqako
