Suffer From Excessive Thin Transparent Mucous That Gets Struck In My Throat Lining Which Irritates Me

Question: Hello doctor, most times i suffer from excessive thin transparent mucous that gets struck in my throat lining which irritates me throughout 24/7 just to clear that up which often results in soreness due to constant forceful clearing.

I suffer from dust & dry air allergies almost throughout year which accompanies constant post nasal drip & i generally take Allegra or levocetrizine for few days temporary to control symptoms but please recommend me something that can help in clearing up thin sticky mucous which keeps getting struck. I have tried ambroxol syrup but it doesn't help much , instead it causes me excessive acid in stomach.

Brief Answer:
Laryngopharyngeal reflux secondary to the acid reflux disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting the query

I have gone through the query and understood your problem.

Your symptoms are related to Laryngopharyngeal reflux secondary to acid reflux disease. When the acid regurgitates into the throat from the stomach, it causes mucosal inflammation. To reduce this inflammation, the body secretes excess saliva or phlegm. This is what you perceive in the throat.

The best way to eliminate this issue is to make lifestyle modifications and take a few medications to prevent Laryngopharyngeal reflux.

My suggestions to you are:
1. Drink frequent sips of warm water
2. Take medications for the acid reflux
3. Avoid coffee, chilled food, and beverages
4. Avoid stress, do exercises regularly

With the above measures, you should get better. I hope this answers your query; revert to me if you have any follow-up queries.

Thanks for your response doctor, any particular med. that can help in mucosal inflammation?? because my all visible back throat mucosa mostly seems red with slight bumps around & on those mucus sticks. I have a reason to believe that both acid reflux as well as allergies also contributing to persisting symptoms, its not getting enough time to heal properly.

Brief Answer:
Proton pump inhibitors and prokinetic medications

Detailed Answer:
Hi ,

Welcome back

You would require Proton pump inhibitors (such as Pantoprazole or Esomeprazole) and prokinetic medications to reduce acid reflux and mucosal inflammation. The bumps in the back of the throat are the granulations secondary to nasal allergy and acid reflux and are complementary to each other.

With proper medications and lifestyle behavioral modifications, you will get better.

I hope this clarifies your doubts. I wish you good health.
