Thanks for writing to us. The following information may help you better.
PCOD is a quite common endocrine disorder among women. Symptoms are appeared in 10% individuals. It is the most common cause of sub fertility in reproductive age group. It has uncertain etiology with more preference on genetic cause and obesity.
Clinical features: 1) Menstrual disorder- Oligomenorrhoea (bleeding after 2-3 months interval) or amenorrhea (no period long time).
2) Infertility- due to irregular ovulation or anovulation.
3) Acne & hirsutism (abnormal hair growth on different parts of the body) due to excess androgen hormone level.
4) Central obesity and insulin resistance may lead to type 2 diabetes in future.
Here, you may need to undergo some additional investigation besides pelvic ultrasound like blood test for LH/ FSH, complete thyroid profile, blood sugar (PPBS), prolactin level, testosterone & DHEAS level etc to figure out extent of the disease. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) is mandatory to rule out diabetes.
There are several treatment modalities. Medical therapy is quite helpful to alleviate symptoms of PCOD with regularization of period. Generally, small cyst does not need any surgical treatment until it interferes with pregnancy.
Low carbohydrate diet, weight reduction by regular exercise along with supportive hormonal medication are the key ingredient to treat PCOD.
Alternatively, you can opt for laparoscopy for removal of the cysts in case of resistant medical therapy or to avoid side effects of hormonal medication.
Please consult with her gynecologist regarding this to perform clinical examination along with relevant investigations for proper management.
