Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: OK , My Wife is having Surgery Tues. to remove a Kidney Stone and the Doctor prescribed a Drug called EMEND which is very expensive for 1 pill. About $85.00. Our drug insurance plan does not have a discount or any of the local drug stores. Can we get another pill with drug or natural substance to do the same thing to prevent her neusea after surgery? What's going on with these Drug companies anyway? Thanks for your answer.

Brief Answer: alternatives below Detailed Answer: that medication that was prescribed is certainly expensive, although it is very good. I suppose your wife has had issues with nausea and vomiting after anesthesia in the past, otherwise I would not even bother looking for an anti-emetic anyways. Your best bet is to ask for something IV (intravenous) right before the procedure. Every surgical center or hospital has those medications readily available, and it would not directly come at your expense (depending on your insurance plan), but most plans have a set co-payment for the surgery. If she needs to have something at home before, then the only medications over the counter that can really help are anti-histaminics (such as diphenhydramine, loratadine, etc) however their effect is weak for this purposes. Your doctor can also prescribe cheaper anti nausea medications, such as metoclopramide, promethazine, etc (price per pill is probably <3$). I don't recommend any herbals for this purpose, as their effect is usually weak (chamomile, ginger, cayenne, peppermint, etc). Drug companies always charge more for new medications, which are usually more potent and with less side effects, and take millions of dollars to develop.. Hope that helps, let me know if you have further questions or concerns. Hope surgery goes well.
